The Burt Lab began in 2020, amidst a global pandemic. The initial cruise to sample the Gulf of Alaska (GoA) was canceled. The Lab with the help of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, was able to go above and beyond the initial scope of its plans during the rest of the year.
Beginning with a July cruise on Research Vessel Sikuliaq, where Will went to sea for two weeks. During which he set up the autonomous optical system that is the base for much our research for the first time. With minimal weather, the only rough spot came from the persistent invasion of bubbles into the system. Compared to Covid, this was a small problem that was quickly resolved.

Thus begun the Burt Lab
